History & standards

The kilogram was introduced during the French Revolution as part of the metric system. It was originally defined as the mass of one litre of water at 4°C. From 1889 until 2019 it was defined by a physical artefact — the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a platinum-iridium cylinder kept in Sèvres, France. Since 2019 the kilogram is defined by fixing the numerical value of the Planck constant, giving it a permanent, artefact-free definition.

The avoirdupois pound traces its roots to medieval English trade and was standardized across the British Empire in 1844. The critical modern milestone was the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement, signed by the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, which fixed 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly — linking the imperial and metric systems permanently.

Limitations & gotchas

  • Rounding the factor. Using 2.2 (instead of 2.20462) introduces a 0.2% error — fine for rough estimates but not for medical dosing or precise shipping charges.
  • Mass vs weight. Kilograms and pounds both measure mass; “weight” in physics is force (Newtons). The everyday usage of “weight” to mean mass is correct in commerce but not in strict physics.
  • Troy pounds. A troy pound (373.24 g, 12 troy oz) is different from an avoirdupois pound (453.59 g). This calculator uses avoirdupois, as used in everyday commerce.

FAQs

One kilogram equals exactly 2.20462262... pounds (lbs). This follows directly from the 1959 definition of the international pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg — so 1 kg = 1 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 2.20462 lb.

Multiply the kilogram value by 2.20462: lb = kg × 2.20462. For a quick mental estimate, multiply by 2.2 — accurate to within 0.2%.

74 × 2.20462 = 163.14 lb. A rough check: 74 × 2.2 = 162.8 — close enough for everyday purposes.

Both are rounded approximations of the exact factor 2.20462262...
